A Look at the Four Majors

Throughout a season on the PGA Tour, there are countless tournaments that players can win. However, four of them are much more prestigious than the others. These four are the Majors and any golfer who wins one will surely cherish these wins forever and each has a purse of about 10 Million dollars. Here I will give a little background and history on each of the four Major tournaments in any PGA season.

1. PGA Championship

The PGA Championship is the final major played in the PGA season and normally takes place in the middle of August (but will be in late July in 2016 due to the Olympics). The tournament was first established in 1916 and is played at a variety of golf courses throughout the years. Jack Nicklaus holds the record for most wins in this tournament with 5 and also finished as a runner up a record 4 times.

2. U.S Open

The U.S Open is the second of the four majors played in a given year and takes place in mid-June, and the final round is played on Father’s Day. It has been around since 1895. The tournament is played at a number of different courses year by year, but a premium is always placed on accurate driving and the scores are normally pretty tight. Jack Niklaus and Ben Hogan have each won the U.S open a record 4 times and Phil Mickelson has finished second place in this tournament a massive 6 times.

3. The Open Championship

The Open Championship is the oldest of all the majors at over 150 years old and is the third major played for every year, as it is played in July. This major is also the only one to be contested outside of the USA as it takes place in the U.K on open links style courses, which are often very near a coast and can have some rough weather. Harry Vardon has won the tournament a record 6 times and Jack Nicklaus has been the runner up seven times.

4. The Masters

We have finally come to the Masters, which is the most prestigious golf tournament out there. This is the first major to be played each year and is played in April and sets the tone for the rest of the season. The tournament has been around for 82 years and since 1949, a green jacket has been awarded to the winner and is probably the most prized possession of any golfer who has one. And unlike any other major, this major is held at the same course every year (the prestigious Augusta course in Georgia). And in a growing trend, Jack Nicklaus has won the Master 6 times and also managed to come second 4 times.
