On July 4, 1919 reigning heavyweight champion Jess Willard fought a young challenger named Jack Dempsey. Before this fight, Willard had killed an opponent in the ring and was generally considered unstoppable. He was so confident, he demanded to be legally indemnified in the event he killed Dempsey in the ring.
What followed was a spectacular beating that transformed boxing forever and thrust a young Jack Dempsey into the limelight.
